Face and Body Soaps

Soaps are obtained by treating vegetable oils and fats with a strong alkaline solution. Fats and oils are composed of triglycerides: three molecules of fatty acids attach to a single molecule of glycerol. The alkaline solution brings about a chemical reaction known as saponification.

Vegetable oils used in soap making are palm oil, coconut oil, olive oil, and laurel oil. Each of this oils offers quite different fatty acid content and hence, results in soaps of distinct feel. The seed oils give softer but milder soaps. Soap made from pure olive oil is sometimes called Castile soap (originating in the Castile region of Spain) or Marseille soap (produced around Marseille, France, for about 600 years), and is known for being extra mild. The term “Castile" is also sometimes applied to soaps from a mixture of oils, but a high percentage of olive oil.

Vegan soap (or vegetable soap) is a variety of soap that is made from fats or oils of vegetable origin only. These soaps may be preferred by vegans and vegetarians. This soaps are made up of pure essential oils and butters, versus drying detergents.
